TIL I was teaching new players wrong by explaining rules before we played, after 4 straight game nights ended early
Every game night at my place in Boise, I would sit everyone down and read the whole rulebook out loud before we touched a single piece, and 4 sessions in a row ended with people checking their phones by turn 3. Last week a friend grabbed the Wingspan box, dealt the cards, and just said 'we'll figure it out as we go,' and suddenly everyone was laughing and actually playing. Do you teach by front loading all the rules, or do you just jump in and explain as stuff comes up?

Boise game nights died because reading rules aloud bores people, not because the rules mattered.
