The old hand at the tank farm in Beaumont told me to pack the tray before I bolt it and I finally get why
Last Tuesday I was helping pull a tray section on a crude unit out near Beaumont and an old hand named Ray watched me fight a tray for 20 minutes trying to slide it in fully bolted. He said "pack it on the ground, son, the tray don't care where you bolt it." We set the gasket and packed the whole section on the deck in about 5 minutes, then it dropped in slick as anything. I'd been doing it the hard way since my first turnaround in 2019 and never once thought to ask why. Anyone else get shown a shortcut by a guy who's been at it 30 years that makes you feel dumb for not seeing it sooner?
Feels familiar, man. Had an old guy show me to lay gaskets out flat the night before instead of fighting them off a coil, and I felt like a fool for every time I'd done it the hard way. It's funny how nobody writes that stuff down, it just lives in these guys' heads until they bother to say it out loud.
