Had to eat crow after arguing against a book club pick for 20 minutes

We were debating The Color of Water. I pushed hard against it. Called it overrated. Said the structure was gimmicky. Then my buddy's wife spoke up. She said she read it with her mom who never talked about her past. They had a whole conversation after. First time in years. I shut up real quick. Book isn't for me. But it does something. Has anyone else had a book club argument that made you look at a book completely different?
