Bought a $90 hand grinder at a garage sale in Eugene and it changed my mornings

I was out in Eugene last weekend hitting up garage sales and found this old hand grinder for $90. It looked beat up but the burrs were solid so I grabbed it. Now I spend 3 minutes grinding every morning instead of using my electric one and the coffee tastes way better. Has anyone else found a deal on used gear that totally shifted how you brew?

Remember when Atlanta networking events actually had coffee?

I went to a tech mixer in Midtown last week and the coffee station was just an empty urn with a sticky note that said 'out of order'. Ngl, it kind of set the tone for the whole night. Half the people were just standing around on their phones instead of talking to each other. I ended up chatting with one guy by the fire exit who had the same complaint about how these events used to feel more genuine. Back in 2018 I swear you could get real connections, not just business card drops. Has anyone else noticed the vibe shifting at these local meetups or is it just me?

Tried turning up my feed rate on aluminum and it actually cut smoother

I've been running a Haas VF-2 for about 2 years now and always babied the feed rate on aluminum parts. Last week I had a rush job for 50 brackets and decided to bump it from 30 ipm to 50 ipm just to see what would happen. To my surprise the surface finish came out way better and I saved almost 3 hours total run time. No chatter, no tool breakage, just cleaner cuts. Has anyone else had luck pushing their feeds way past what feels safe?

Overheard a client say barbers are just 'scissor jockeys' last week

I was working on a fade in my chair when this guy in the waiting area said it to his buddy. He was totally serious, like we just wave scissors around with no skill. I kept my mouth shut but it took everything not to jump in. Has anyone else heard some dumb label for what we do and how did you handle it?

Found out LVP planks can offgas way more than I thought

I was scrolling through some OSHA site last night and saw that luxury vinyl plank can release phthalates for way longer after install than I figured. Like, I always knew it had some VOC stuff going on, but one stat said levels can stay elevated for up to 14 days in a sealed room. That got me thinking about how we never crack windows after we finish a job. Do any of you guys air out rooms after installing or do you just send it and move on?

That stat about 80% of clients not paying on time surprised me more than it should have

I was looking through some freelancer forums last week and found a survey from a site called FreshBooks that said 80% of small business owners have clients who pay late. I always figured it was just me dealing with that in my graphic design work here in Austin. But seeing that number made me realize maybe I'm not the one causing the problem. I had a client last month who took 45 days to pay a $600 invoice for a logo redesign. Has anyone else found data that actually changed how they handle their billing process?

Just realized my "quick 15 minute" oven repair took 4 hours yesterday

I tried replacing the heating element in my Whirlpool and stripped the mounting screw, then spent 3 hours trying to drill it out without ruining the oven wall. Has anyone else had a simple fix spiral into an all-day project?

Why nobody talks about coworking space noise levels in Southeast Asia

I tried working from a popular coworking spot in Chiang Mai last month thinking it would be perfect. The WiFi was fast and the coffee was cheap, but the noise was way worse than I expected. People take calls right at their desks without headphones and the staff plays loud pop music all afternoon. I ended up getting almost nothing done for two days straight. What I learned is that I need to check a place out in person during busy hours before committing. A quiet cafe with slower internet actually worked better for me in the end. Has anyone else had trouble finding quiet workspaces in places like Thailand or Vietnam?

I used to think he was just the cool brooding guy too, but after reading the Claremont run again I realized he's constantly trying to build a family and it's everyone else who keeps pushing him away, isn't that the real tragedy?

My sewing machine ate the fabric during a live stream in Austin last month

I was doing a demo on how to do French seams for a small online group from my little apartment. The bobbin tension went totally bonkers and the whole piece got sucked into the feed dogs. I just laughed it off and told them that's why you always keep extra fabric nearby. Anybody else have a machine fail at the worst possible time?
