That 150th page just hit me different

I was totally against the whole 'page count matters' argument in our club, but when I hit page 150 of The Secret History last week and realized I had gasped out loud three times, I finally got why some books need that length to pull you under. Has anyone else passed a random page number and suddenly understood an argument you'd been fighting against?

Wait did your friend ever get to that part in The Secret History where they find out about the bunny situation? My buddy Mark was the same way with The Stand, he swore up and down that Stephen King was just padding his word count until he hit page 400 and realized he had been reading for six hours straight without blinking. He called me at 2am to say he finally got why epic fantasies need to be long because he was crying over a character who had like three lines total in the whole book. Now he's the guy who argues for the longest version of everything, even the extended editions of movies nobody asked for.

Nah, length for length's sake gets old fast...

Mark's got a point about The Stand though, that book earns its length.
