Saw a shop switch from hand sewing every signature to a $900 sewing machine, and the whole feel of the books changed
Back in 2019 my old boss in Portland still sewed every book by hand, but after he got a machine the spines stopped opening flat the way they used to. Anyone else notice machine sewn bindings just do not crack the same way when you read them?

Yup! My buddy's machine-sewn books never crack right either.
