My uncle's rose pruning advice nearly killed my climber

My uncle visited last spring and insisted I cut my climbing rose down to 8 inches, said it would explode with growth. I followed his advice on my poor 'New Dawn' in early April, and for two months it just sat there looking dead. Then suddenly it shot out these wild, thick canes that grew over the fence and grabbed my neighbor's gutters. I mean, maybe his method works for hybrid teas in his Kentucky yard, but up here in Michigan's clay soil it was chaos. Has anyone else had a relative's old school trick backfire in a totally different climate?
