Pro tip: my indoor fig tree exploded after 1 cheap fix

I've been babying this fiddle leaf fig in my Denver apartment for like 8 months and it kept dropping leaves no matter what. Finally grabbed a basic moisture meter for $9 at the hardware store and realized I was watering way too much, the soil was still soaked 3 inches down. Dialed it back to every 10 days and in 6 weeks it pushed out 4 new leaves plus a little branch. Has anyone else found that a $10 tool beats guessing with plants?

Wait, are you testing the moisture at the same depth every time? I've heard the top can feel dry but the bottom stays wet for weeks, and that little meter might be saving you but only if you're consistent about where you poke it.

Soil moisture meters are the ultimate lazy hack, @gray314, saves you from killing stuff with kindness. Poking at the same spot every time is key, I just jam it near the roots where the real drama happens. My fig went from bald to bushy, so yeah, ten bucks beats my guess every single time.
