Getting my kids to prep veggie sticks for the week saved us a ton

I had my two boys help me wash and chop carrots, celery, and bell peppers right after our grocery trip. Now we have a big container of ready-to-eat snacks in the fridge that stops us from buying expensive chips or convenience packs. It cut down on food waste too, since we use all the veggies before they go bad. The best part is they feel proud helping, which is a nice bonus.

Hold on, you let little kids use sharp knives? I mean, maybe I'm just paranoid, but the thought of my nephew near a chef's knife gives me cold chills. Even watching adults chop sometimes makes me nervous, idk.

That's a smart plan for cutting costs and food waste. Letting kids use sharp knives might not be the best move though. Even with close watch, it's easy for a hand to slip. Consider having them wash or snap celery instead until they're more skilled. The helping pride is a real bonus, so keeping tasks age-safe makes sense. You want to avoid a trip to the emergency room over some carrot sticks.

Dull knives cause more slips than sharp ones, ironically.

Has anyone looked into those kid-safe nylon knives? My cousin got a set for her five year old. They're sharp enough to cut a banana or a soft cheese block, but they can't break skin. It seems like a decent middle step before moving to real steel, lets them learn the motion without the same risk.
