I've been buying dried beans for years, but a friend insisted canned are the better deal. Did the math and one is definitely cheaper.

Yeah, the math almost always favors dried, but you gotta factor in your own time and energy costs too. Soaking overnight and then simmering for an hour uses a lot more gas or electricity than just heating a can. For a single person who just wants one quick meal, the canned might win out on pure convenience, even if the per-ounce price is higher.

Gray314's buddy finally doing the math is the whole story. Dried wins every time unless you're really that lazy.

Oh man, my buddy swore by canned for the longest time. He finally sat down with his grocery receipt and a calculator, really stubborn about it. Turns out a bag of dried black beans made like triple the amount for half the price of his usual cans. His face was priceless.
