Just realized my local library does more than lend books
I was picking up a hold in Springfield and saw a flyer for a free 'cooking on a SNAP budget' class. They had a demo making a huge pot of black bean chili for about eight dollars total. Has anyone else found unexpected spots for cheap meal ideas?

Honestly, libraries are the last place I'd look for cooking help. That flyer sounds nice, but a one time class doesn't really teach you how to shop or plan meals every week. You're better off just searching online for budget recipes, because you can find exactly what you need anytime. Those library events are often at weird hours when most people are working anyway. It feels more like they're checking a box for community outreach than offering real, ongoing help.

My local library's cooking demo last month was at 2pm on a Tuesday. That's the exact problem, these programs are designed for the unemployed or retired, not people with regular jobs. It creates a gap where the help never reaches the people who might actually need it most.

Totally agree with you and ninar68. Those daytime hours are a huge miss. They should offer the same class at night or on a weekend. It feels like they aren't even trying to reach working people. A one time demo at 2pm is basically useless for most adults. They need to fix the schedule if they want to actually help.
