My roommate called my 'budget' chili a can of beans with ketchup
He straight up said 'dude, that's not chili, that's just sad beans' after I made my usual cheap dinner. I was just throwing a can of beans, some ketchup, and a pinch of chili powder into a pot. I argued it cost like $1.50 a bowl, but he showed me his way. He browns a quarter pound of the cheapest ground beef, adds two cans of beans, a whole onion, and a big can of crushed tomatoes. It makes a giant pot for about $8 total, and it's actually good. I've been doing it his way for a month now and it's way better. Anyone have other cheap recipes that don't taste like punishment?

Ever tried adding a spoonful of peanut butter to cheap ramen? Sounds weird but it makes a kind of satay sauce. I used to just eat the flavor packet, but now I whisk in peanut butter and a dash of soy sauce while it cooks. It turns a 30 cent meal into something that feels like actual food.
