PSA: I've been salting my beans wrong this whole time, thanks to my neighbor Carol

She saw me dumping salt into the pot before boiling and just shook her head, said you gotta add it at the end or the skins get tough no matter how cheap the beans are. Tried it last Thursday with a $2 bag of pintos and they came out creamy instead of gritty, which is huge when you're stretching meals for a week. Anyone else make this mistake or am I the only one who grew up with bad bean habits?

Wait, does salting at the end actually fix the tough skin thing? I used to add salt early too and just figured cheap beans were always gonna be kinda gritty, but I tried the late salt trick last month and honestly it made a huge difference for me too.
