Trying to make my own bread for cheap took way longer than I thought

I saw a video about making bread with just flour, water, salt, and yeast to save money. I figured it would be simple and take maybe an hour. My first three tries were total failures, either too dense or not cooked in the middle. I finally got a decent loaf on the fourth try, but the whole process from start to finish took me about two weeks of trying. It was frustrating but now I can make a loaf for under a dollar. Has anyone else had a tough time getting homemade bread right?

My bread attempts could double as hockey pucks, so I feel you.

Honestly, is it really that cheap when you factor in all the wasted ingredients and your time? Tbh my store's bakery outlet sells day-old loaves for like a dollar fifty that taste way better than my attempts ever did. I just don't think the hassle is worth the tiny savings for me.

My "attempts" usually end up as doorstops...
