Appreciation post: the $4 night bus from Bangkok to Chiang Mai beat my $90 flight in every way
Back in 2019 I was in Thailand with about $600 total for 3 weeks and I had to decide between a cheap overnight bus or a quick flight up north. The bus was loud and cramped but I saved $86, met two Aussies who showed me a $1 noodle spot, and walked off rested enough to skip a hostel night. Has anyone else found a slow cheap ride that actually beat the fast pricey option on a trip?
Did you ever try the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang? I did that one for two days on the Mekong and it cost me almost nothing. The seats were hard wood benches and my butt hurt by day two, but I shared a bag of sticky rice with a German couple and a Lao family taught me a card game. We stopped at a tiny village overnight where the guesthouse was like three bucks. The slow boat took forever compared to flying but I still remember those two days more than any flight I have ever taken.
