In my experience, skipping checked bags by packing light kept my travel costs down. Take this with a grain of salt.

Flew to Denver last year with only a backpack. Baggage fees were avoided. Wore the same jeans multiple days. Bought a cheap sweatshirt when temperatures dropped. Still saved money overall. Loved the simplicity of traveling light.

Forget the freedom, I always check a bag. Trying to cram everything into a tiny carry-on just makes the whole trip stressful from the start. You end up wearing the same dirty clothes or wasting vacation time doing laundry in a sink. Paying the fee is worth it to have the right shoes, a spare jacket, and not worry about liquid limits. Real comfort on the road means having what you need, not just what you can squeeze under a seat.

Absolutely. Did a four day trip to Seattle with just a carry-on last fall. Wore my one pair of black jeans the whole time and just washed a shirt in the hotel sink one night. The freedom of just walking off the plane was worth it alone.
