Picked a hostel in Barcelona over a cheap hotel and got bed bugs...
I was trying to save $30 a night on a 5 day trip last month. The hostel had great reviews but I woke up with bites on day 2. Had to throw out my backpack and wash everything in hot water when I got home. Has anyone else had a hostel gamble go this bad?

Actually that $30 a night difference might have saved you more in the long run. Hostels can be a real gamble even with good reviews since bed bugs don't care about star ratings. Sucks you had to toss your bag though, that's brutal.

Man that's rough... losing your whole bag to bed bugs is a nightmare scenario. I had a friend who went through the same thing in Barcelona and he was paranoid for months after. Even the nice hostels can have issues since it just takes one person bringing them in from somewhere else. Really feel for you having to toss everything, especially if you had stuff you couldn't easily replace on the road.
