Unpopular opinion: ditching my rental car in Rome and walking saved me $260 in 5 days
Everyone in this sub keeps saying you need a car to see Italy, but I parked mine at the hotel on day one and never touched it again. Walking from Trastevere to the Colosseum and back each day cost me nothing, and I ate way better because I kept finding little spots the drivers just blow past. My brother did the rental thing in 2022 and blew $260 on gas, tolls, and a parking ticket in five days. Does anyone here actually think a car in a city like Rome is worth the hassle, or am I missing something?
Why would anyone pay for a car they just leave parked the whole trip? My friend did the exact same thing last spring, rented a Fiat for her "Tuscany day trip" plans, then realized the train to Florence was faster and cheaper so the car sat in a garage off Via Nazionale for four days. She still had to pay for the rental and the garage spot, so she basically lit like $180 on fire for the joy of looking at a car she never drove. The kicker is she got a $70 ticket anyway because the garage moved it to the street one night and forgot to tell her. Walking Rome is the move, the city is tiny and the buses get stuck in traffic just like cars do. You are not missing anything.
