Why does EVERY hostel group chat turn into a meme war by day 2?

I was on a 3 week trip through Barcelona and noticed that no matter where I stayed, people would start spamming memes in the WhatsApp group by the second night and then nobody could find info about the free walking tour. Is this just a universal thing or do I need to find hostels with stricter rules?

Hour 4 is generous, my group in Lisbon started the meme dump before the welcome email even went out.

You're calling it "day 2" but in my experience the meme war starts around hour 4, usually right after the first awkward "anyone getting dinner?" message.
