Warning: my grocery bill dropped by $40 after I stopped buying those pre-cut veggie trays

I was cleaning out my fridge and found the receipt from one of those plastic party trays, and it was $12.99 for basically a few peppers and some broccoli. I started just buying the whole vegetables and cutting them myself on Sunday, and the savings are real. How much do you think those convenience foods actually cost you?

I always figured the extra cost was worth the time saved. Seeing the actual receipt made me realize how much they're charging for a few minutes of knife work. My Sunday prep feels way more worth it now.

That deli upcharge, @caseywalker, is everywhere now.

My local spot charged me four dollars to slice a pound of turkey last week. I stood there like a fool while a teenager did in thirty seconds what takes me ten minutes at home. Guess I'm paying for the luxury of my own poor knife skills.
