I finally bought the $180 cable toner and it paid for itself on one Jonesboro job
Spent two hours last month ringing out a 48 port patch panel by hand at a bank branch in Jonesboro, so I dropped $180 on a tone generator and probe kit, and it found a crossed pair in the ceiling run in about ten minutes, so what tester are you guys running that doesn't cost a whole paycheck?
A toner finds and traces pairs but it won't tell you if a pair is crossed, that's what the probe and your ears are for when you hear the tone jump where it shouldn't. The crossed pair you caught was probably you noticing the tone was on the wrong pin, not the tool flagging it for you. Still a solid buy at $180 if it saves you one bad run.
