Turns out I was coiling coax the wrong way for 8 years

I was doing the standard over-under coil on a job in Austin and a senior guy stopped me, said my wraps were twisting the cable core. He showed me how to flip my wrist every loop and it clicked instantly. Anyone else get handed down a basic trick that made you question everything?

8 years. Man, I spent 6 years wrapping mic cables the wrong way and only figured it out when a drummer threw one at my head. The wrist flip thing sounds like magic but honestly it just means my cables finally lay flat instead of looking like a slinky that gave up.

The first time I got it right I was in a studio and the engineer just nodded at me and said “there you go. Now do it twenty more times so it sticks.” I think that’s the real trick, honestly. You just have to drill it until your hands remember, not your brain. Now I can do it on autopilot while talking about something else entirely.
