Used to drill through 3 studs and pray, now I run a magnet on a string first
Back when I started running drops in old Milwaukee two-flats, I would just pick a spot, drill through the top plate, and hope I missed the fire blocking. I probably did that for my first 8 months and ate drywall dust on maybe 30 jobs, plus one nasty surprise where I nicked a copper pipe in a place called Bay View and the lady made me pay for the plumber. Now I tape a little magnet to a scrap of pull string and drop it down the bay first. Sounds silly but the magnet grabs any nails or screws in the blocking, and I can hear where it lands. Takes 20 extra seconds and it has saved me at least 4 blowouts. Anyone else got a cheap trick like that for two-story party walls?
Man, I wish I heard that magnet trick years ago when I was doing old duplexes, would've saved me a ton of patching. I read somewhere that a stud finder with a deep scan mode can sometimes read through old plaster too, but the string trick sounds way more reliable.
