I was cleaning shutter blades with a cotton swab for years until a guy in Seattle pointed at my loupe.

Cleaning my record player stylus was a big one. I used a basic brush for years until a friend showed me the tiny mirror trick. You put a mirror under the needle and the reflection shows all the gunk packed into the tip that a brush misses. Now I use a special gel cleaner first, and the sound is so much clearer. That "tiny mirror trick" reminds me of when I finally learned to check my bike chain for stretch with a ruler, not just lube it.
