I changed my mind about cheap chisels after ruining two projects

I used to swear by those $15 chisel sets from the big box store. Thought sharpening was just a waste of time and you could get by with grinding them down. Then I tried to do a dovetail joint on a cherry desk I was building for my sister in Portland. The edge chipped halfway through and I had to scrap the whole piece. Lost about $80 in lumber and a full weekend. So I went and bought a single Narex chisel for $35 and sharpened it right. Never going back to cheap sets again. Anyone else have a similar wake-up call with bargain tools?

Totally feel you on this one. @fisher.jessica is right that good tools pay for themselves. I had a similar moment with a cheap plane that just wouldn't hold an edge.

Respectfully gotta disagree @finley_smith sometimes you can tune a cheap plane to work just fine.

Good tools are cheaper than bad ones in the long run.
