Warning: picked pine over white oak for a kitchen island top and I'm already regretting it
Went pine to save about $140 on the board and it's been denting from nothing but a butter knife and coffee mug since March in my shop. Anyone got a good way to harden up a soft top without tearing the whole thing off?
denting from nothing but a butter knife and coffee mug" sounds kinda normal for pine honestly. A mug dropped on any wood top can leave a mark, and a butter knife pressed hard will dent softer stuff too. Are you sure it's worse than you expected or are you just noticing it more now that you're watching for it? Pine does dent easier than oak, no argument there, but a few small dings in a shop island is not really a crisis. Wood moves and wears, that's just part of it. If it was your fancy kitchen at home I'd get the worry, but in a shop it seems fine to me.
