Watched a guy in Boise cut his seams before the carpet relaxed and it hit me, I had been doing it wrong for 9 years
I was helping on a 3 room job off Broadway in Boise and the lead guy let the carpet sit for almost 2 hours before he touched a single seam. I always cut mine right after unrolling, thinking faster was cleaner. He showed me how much the backing stretches when it comes off the roll warm, and my seam peaking issue I blamed on bad tape was really me cutting too soon. I went back and checked my own work from a job two weeks before and sure enough, 3 of my 5 seams had a slight crown. Now I unroll, let it breathe, do my power stretch, then cut. Any of you wait a set time based on room temp, or is it more of a feel thing?

Wait, 2 hours? That is wild to me. I would be standing there losing my mind watching the clock while the homeowner is asking when we will be done. I get that the backing relaxes but letting it sit that long feels like it would mess with your stretch pattern too, no? I have always been in the cut it soon camp but now you have me second guessing 12 years of habits. Gonna have to test this on my next tear out and actually check my seams after.
