Switched to email paper trail after a $900 phone call dispute
Used to handle everything over the phone with clients. Quick calls, friendly chats, all good. Then one builder claimed he never agreed to the rush fee. Said I quoted him a flat rate. I had zero proof besides my memory. That was a $900 lesson in Austin. Now every price change or extension gets a follow-up email the same day. I even screenshot the text if that's how we talked. Has anyone else been burned by a verbal agreement that went sideways?

Funny how we learn this stuff the hard way, right? Once you start paying attention, you notice how many everyday things run on a handshake and a promise. I’ve seen people lose money on car repairs, rental deposits, even a simple yard sale deal because nobody wrote it down. Paper trails aren’t just for business, they’re for any situation where cash changes hands. You’re smart to make it a habit before it costs you more than once.

Huh, I get where you're coming from, but honestly I think a handshake still means something between decent people. I've done plenty of cash deals with just a nod and never got burned. Getting lawyers involved for a yard sale feels like overkill, you know?
