Vent: That chat with the old timer at the supply yard hit me hard
I was picking up brushes at the supply yard on Tuesday and this retired sweep named Gene told me I was overcharging for my Level 1 inspections by $50. He said he used to lose customers by nickel-and-diming them and now I'm scared I've been doing the same thing for years. Has anyone else had an older sweep give you advice that totally changed how you run your business?

This old sweep named Gene told me last spring that I was pricing my Level 1s $50 too high too, @william_craig7. He swore by bundling a free flue brush with every inspection and said customers would pay extra just for the convenience of not having to shop around. I tried it and ended up losing money on the brush, but people sure did appreciate not having to think about it.

Did Gene give you any warning about how to spot that you're overcharging? I had a similar wake up call from an old sweep who told me to bundle my basic inspections with a discount for regular customers. It worked great for me because it kept people coming back and they felt like they were getting a deal.

Totally agree with you on bundling, @william_craig7. I once threw in a free chimney cap with a seasonal inspection and people started handing me their neighbor's numbers like candy. It wasn't even about the discount, they just loved feeling like they got something extra.
