Finally hired a mediator after a client refused to pay for completed work

Cost me about $400 for the initial session, but it got the guy to release the $2,500 he was holding. I was ready to write it off as a total loss. Anyone have a cheaper alternative that worked for them?

My cousin tried to sue his old landlord for a security deposit. The filing fees alone were more than the deposit was worth. He spent six months mailing certified letters and showing up to hearings, just to get half of it back. Sometimes the cheaper option ends up costing you more in time and stress.

Totally feel that! I had a nearly identical fight over a pet deposit. The court costs ate up most of the money I was trying to get back. I wasted so many afternoons just sitting around waiting for my case to be called. You're right, the stress makes you wonder why you even started. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and walk away.

Mediation for $2500? Seems like a lot of hassle for that amount.

Used to agree with you until my neighbor went to court over a similar amount. Spent over a year fighting, lost way more in legal fees, and still hates the guy next door. Mediation got it done in a month and they can actually wave hello now. The hassle is in the fighting, not the fix.
