I called B.S. on deposit-first scheduling for years, then a $1,800 job in Tacoma flipped me
For years I booked whoever called first and chased money after the work was done, and I figured deposits just scared folks off. Last spring a guy in Tacoma wanted a big oak taken down, then kept pushing the date 3 weeks while I turned down two other jobs to hold his slot, and he finally ghosted me. Right after that a lady asked to book me and I almost said yes without a deposit, then remembered his address and asked for 30% down instead, which is about $540 on a $1,800 job. She paid it that same day without blinking, and honestly that was the whole test I needed. Now I ask for a deposit on anything over 2 hours of work and I have not lost a real customer yet. Curious if you all set the percent by job size or just run one flat number.
One nice lady paying a deposit doesn't really prove much, that's just one good customer out of who knows how many. Sounds like a run of bad luck more than a system that needed fixing.
