Am I the only one who still asks for a deposit up front after what happened in Baton Rouge?
Back in 2019 I did a logo and menu redesign for a cafe on Perkins Road and the guy swore he'd pay half upfront, then handed me a check that bounced. I spent 6 weeks chasing $450 and finally just ate it. Now I ask for a deposit before I open the file, and a few folks grumble about it like it's rude. Anyone else got a rule they made after one bad job?
That Perkins Road story sounds way too familiar. What worked for me was putting the deposit in the quote itself, like "50% to start, rest on delivery," so it looks like a normal step instead of me asking a favor. The folks who push back on that are usually the same ones who cause trouble later, so the grumbling kinda does you a favor.
