Warning: The 'I'll pay you after I get my tax return' client

I did a full kitchen demo for a guy who said that exact line... I'm out $3,200 and it's been four months. He just ghosts my calls now. Anyone else have a client use that specific excuse?

Yeah that line is basically a giant red flag now. It means they don't have the money right now and are banking on a future maybe. I've heard it for everything from small repairs to big jobs. One guy told me that, then his "return" was somehow less than he thought and he tried to pay half. You just have to get a deposit up front, no matter how much they swear the money is coming.

Ever think they say that line because they're already in debt to someone else? Like they're juggling bills and your job is just the next one in line. If the money was really coming they'd have no problem putting some down to hold the spot. That "return" story is just the first excuse, there's always another one after.
