A county inspector told me my rain barrel setup was illegal, I redesigned it
She said my downspout diverter dumped into the barrel but had no overflow route to the yard, so it violated the stormwater rule here in Tucson. I added a 1.5 inch overflow hose linked to a second barrel and now I catch about 60 gallons per monsoon storm, has anyone else had to rework their system for local codes?
You know what funny is, I used to figure the inspector was just being picky about rules. Then my neighbor had his barrel overflow during a big storm last summer and the water ran right back against his foundation. He ended up with a soaked crawl space and a $1,200 bill to fix it. After that I put an overflow hose on mine that runs out to the alley, and I have not had one problem since. Turns out those codes are there for a real reason, not just to make us do more work.
