Can we talk about how I composted wrong for 3 years and didn't know it?
Honestly I thought I was doing everything right with my compost bin until last week when my neighbor Carol asked to look inside it. I had been dumping in coffee grounds, eggshells, and grass clippings for about 3 years and always wondered why it smelled like a wet garbage can instead of dirt. Carol pointed out I had zero browns in there, like not one leaf or bit of cardboard, so the whole thing was just rotting instead of composting. She gave me a bag of shredded paper from her office and told me to aim for roughly 3 parts browns to 1 part greens. Two days later the smell was gone and it actually started heating up like it's supposed to. Turns out all those food scraps I thought I was saving from the landfill were basically just sitting there doing nothing good. Anyone else mess up their brown to green ratio for way too long before someone called them out?
