Spent 3 hours chasing a chatter problem that turned out to be one stupid thing
Had a finish pass on 4140 that kept squealing no matter what I did with speeds and feeds, so I swapped holders, re-indicated the vise, and even blamed the coolant. Turned out a chip had welded itself to the insert seat and I never saw it until I pulled the insert under a light, so what's the dumbest thing that ever ate your whole afternoon?
Man, that chip welding to the seat is a sneaky one. Question for you though, did the squeal change at all when you messed with the speeds, or was it dead consistent the whole time? I ask because I had something like that and the noise would shift just enough to make me think I was on the right track. Also how did you finally spot it, just pulling the insert out under a light?
