Had a rude awakening about my pour-over technique last Sunday
I've been making pour-over coffee for like 3 years and thought I had it dialed. Then my buddy who roasts beans out of his garage in Portland watched me do it and pointed out I was pouring way too fast. He clocked my total brew time at 1 minute 45 seconds which is basically instant coffee territory. Has anyone else had a friend completely wreck their confidence in a skill they thought they had down?

@shane170 that time range is key. I had a friend who was a barista, she told me she used to rush her whole brew in under 2 minutes for years until her boss timed her on a slow day and made her start over. She said it took her like 3 weeks of setting a timer every morning to finally slow down and actually taste the difference.

Read somewhere that the ideal pour over brew time is between 2.5 and 4 minutes depending on your grind. Sounds like your buddy was right to call it out. I read a post on a coffee forum where a guy tested his pour over with a stopwatch and realized he was rushing it too. Took him like a month to slow down and get the taste right again. Hope you can get your brew dialed back in.

Honestly that sounds like one of those things where you don't realize you're doing it wrong until someone points it out. It's like when you're driving and someone tells you you've been gripping the steering wheel too tight the whole time, you just loosen up and suddenly everything feels smoother. Same with brewing coffee I guess, you get stuck in a routine and forget to check if it's actually working. Takes a conscious effort to break that muscle memory and slow down, but once you do, it's hard to go back to rushing.
