Watched a barista in Portland weigh my beans and it ruined my morning scoop forever
Stopped at a small cafe in Portland while visiting my brother a few months ago and the guy behind the counter pulled out a little scale before grinding anything. He weighed out 18 grams of beans and told me the scoop method can swing 5 grams either way depending on the bean. I went home and tried it with my cheap kitchen scale and sure enough my usual scoop was giving me anywhere from 14 to 22 grams. Now I weigh every single time and my cups taste way more consistent, though my wife thinks I look ridiculous. Has anyone else made the switch or do you still just eyeball it?
My wife gives me the same look every time I pull out the scale. I got tired of my coffee tasting different every morning so I grabbed a cheap digital one off Amazon for like twelve bucks. Turns out my "heaping scoop" was closer to 24 grams on some beans and my light roast mornings were basically twice as strong as my dark roast ones. No wonder some days I felt like I could see through time and other days I was basically drinking bean water. The scale lives on the counter now and she has stopped asking what it's for.
