Mylar bags vs. regular bags changed how I store my keys

Honestly, I collected comics for almost 9 years before I realized I was storing them all wrong. I used standard plastic bags with no backing board, just folding the flap over and shoving them in a long box. Last summer I pulled out a 1999 issue of Daredevil and the cover had this weird crease from the flap pressure. A buddy at the shop in Austin showed me how a stiff board and a properly sealed mylar bag keeps the spine straight and stops the bag from sagging. I thought it was marketing hype until I saw a 1967 issue he had in mylar, it looked like it came off the press yesterday. Now I'm slowly rebagging my whole run of about 400 issues, which is a weekend project I keep putting off. Has anyone else discovered they were wrecking their books for years without knowing it? What finally tipped you off, a bent corner or a faded cover?
