Took me 5 years to realize I was bagging my long boxes wrong
I've been collecting comics since 2018 and I always just slid the bag right over the open end of the box. Last week at a shop in Denver I saw a guy flipping through his long boxes and every bag had the opening facing down toward the bottom of the box. He said it keeps dust from settling on the opening and makes it way easier to slide books out without the bag catching. I tried it on three boxes when I got home and honestly it's night and day. All those years I was fighting with bags that would peel open or get crinkled at the top for no reason. Has anyone else made that switch or am I the last person to figure this out?

Wait, did he have the actual bag opening facing the bottom of the box or just the flap folded under? I've seen some people tape the whole bag closed and then put it in opening down, but that seems like overkill. Is there a trick to keeping the books from sliding out when you tilt the box back?

Honestly, this is one of those things where people overthink the whole process. I remember watching my dad pack boxes for years, and he'd just fold the flap under and lay the bag opening flat against the books, then stack them tight so nothing shifted. It's like packing a suitcase, if you cram everything in there snug enough, nothing moves much even when you tilt it. Bigger pattern I've noticed is people think a specific trick or fold is the secret, but really it's just about how tight the box is packed overall.

Wait, your dad just folded the flap under and left the bag opening exposed on top of the books? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. The first time you tilt that box sideways everything is going to slide right out, I've seen it happen. I always tape the whole bag closed and then flip it so the sealed opening is down against the bottom, that way the weight of the books keeps it all shut.
