A trip to the scrapyard changed how I prep my gear before a dive

Last Saturday I stopped by a metal recycler in Norfolk to pick up a used prop shaft for a side job, and I watched a crane operator drop a 400-pound piece of steel about thirty feet from where I was standing. The impact shook the ground, and it hit me how much force we deal with underwater without thinking. I used to just hose off my helmet and band mask after a job, but now I spend a full hour inspecting every fitting and hose connection, checking for hairline cracks or wear. That scrap yard moment made me realize a tiny failure at depth is a bigger gamble than any payday. My dive supervisor back in 2019 always said, 'check it twice or don't go,' and I finally get why. Anyone else had a random onshore event that made them tighten up their pre-dive routine?

Torque wrench every fitting before dive. That scrap incident woulda had me checking seals twice too.
