DAE remember the old timer at the Galveston dock who told me to check my hat valve before every splash
I was 22 and rushing to get in the water on a pier job and he grabbed my shoulder and said "son, your hat valve is open" right there on the dock. The guy never raised his voice, just pointed at the knob, and that stuck with me more than any safety meeting ever did. Now I do a quick valve check before every splash, anyone else have a near miss like that early on?
Man, I gotta push back on this one. A valve check on the dock sounds great in a story, but it can also give you a false sense of security, like you already did the important part so you can rush the rest. I mean, if that old timer had pointed at your knob and then walked off, you'd probably still have a busted seal or a kinked hose and feel fine about it. The check that actually matters happens right before you go under, not fifteen minutes earlier on the pier while you're still messing with your gear. Idk, maybe it's just me, but a habit like that can turn into a box you tick instead of a real look at your setup. I'd rather people build a slow, steady routine at the water than trust one glance on the dock to save them.
