Spent $1,400 on a full-face mask, then went back to my old one in a week
I do inland and harbor work near Seattle, mostly hull cleaning and salvage. Three months ago I dropped $1,400 on a new Kirby Morgan full-face because my neck seal kept leaking on cold water dives. The fit was perfect in the shop, but on the bottom the exhaust valve stuck twice and fogged my lens so bad I had to surface early on a paid job. My supervisor just shook his head and said, sometimes the old gear wins. I switched back to my old band mask for a tenth of that cost and haven't had a single issue since. Has anyone else shelled out for top-end gear only to find the midrange option runs better in real conditions?
Bought myself a fancy drysuit once, brand new, top of the line. Spent the whole first dive fighting the zipper and ended up doing a weird crab walk back to the truck. My beat-up old suit from a garage sale still hangs in my garage, dry as a bone. Sometimes the fancy stuff just ain't worth the hassle.
