Guy at Micro Center swore I needed a 1200W PSU for a basic office build

I was building a PC for my wife's cousin to browse Facebook and pay bills. Some kid working there insisted a 300W unit would fry the system, so I grabbed a 1200W Corsair just to shut him up. $250 later and the PC runs fine with a kill-a-watt reading 180W under load. Has anyone else had a salesperson talk you into something way overkill?

Walked into a Best Buy for a laptop charger once and left with a whole damn gaming laptop cause the guy said my old one would just die anyway. $800 later and I just needed a $30 cord. Your 1200W story is wild though, that sales kid must be getting commission on the expensive stuff.

Best Buy sales people work on commission but it's actually not that crazy for the high end stuff, they make the same percentage on a $30 cord as they do on that 1200W PSU. I used to work retail back in college and the real trick is they push the accessories and protection plans way harder than the big ticket items. That kid probably got a better payout from selling the cables and the extended warranty than he did from the power supply itself.

Read an article once that said they make more on a 10 cent cable than a whole TV.
