Appreciation post: switched from a float to a mag on a basement slab in Fort Wayne last month and I'm never looking back
I've been floating everything by hand since I started in this trade and a buddy kept telling me to try a magnesium float on the wet stuff. On a 1,200 square foot basement pour in Fort Wayne last month I finally grabbed one and the difference in how the cream came up was night and day. The mag pushed the aggregate down way cleaner and I could tell right away my finishing window opened up by a good 15 minutes. I still use my wood float for the final pass but the mag did the heavy lifting without tearing anything up. Anyone here run mags on flatwork year round or do you only pull them out for certain mixes?
Ran a mag on a garage pad back in the spring and the same thing happened with the cream coming up. What got me was how much longer the tool lasted. My old wood float was getting chewed up on every pour and I was swapping them out way too often. The mag I bought has been going strong since March and still looks about the same. Only thing I watch now is not working the surface too early when it's cold out, because that mag will pull water up fast if the mix is wet. Learned that one the hard way on a small sidewalk job and had to wait it out before I could touch it again.
