I finally figured out why my broom finish kept looking streaky

For years, I'd get these light and dark streaks on my flatwork, especially on big pours like a 20x30 patio. Last week, an old timer on another crew saw me working and just said, 'Kid, you're pushing that broom too hard.' I was using way too much pressure, dragging the bristles instead of letting them just kiss the surface. Tried his way on a small section, and it came out perfectly even. Has anyone else had to unlearn a basic habit like that?

My uncle ran a crew in Tampa for thirty years and he always said the real trick was in the wrist, not the pressure. He taught me to use a heavier broom and let the weight do the work, so you actually do need a firm push on some mixes. That light touch just makes a mess with the concrete we get up here.

Wait, you're still using a broom for finish work?

Honestly, that reminds me of when I was learning to tape drywall. My boss kept yelling at me for leaving ridges until he saw I was holding the knife like a dinner knife.
