Appreciation post: the notary in Phoenix who told me to read the indemnity part out loud
I was getting a small freelance contract signed at a UPS store in Phoenix about 5 months ago for an $800 job, and the notary, a retired paralegal named Dawn, noticed me skimming. She said, "Read the part about holding them harmless out loud, it changes how it sounds." I did, and it basically said if their client sued over my work, I was paying for their lawyers too. I crossed it out, we both initialed it, and the guy hiring me didn't even blink. 4 months later that exact clause came up in a bigger gig and I caught it in maybe 10 seconds. Now I always say the risky parts out loud before I sign, weirdly it works. Does anyone else do a read aloud trick, or is Dawn just some kind of wizard?
