Vent: that $1800 deck bid almost cost me my hand last month in Toledo
I was on a second story deck tear out off Secor Rd in Toledo about 3 weeks back, cutting the old ledger board loose with a recip saw when the blade bound up and kicked the saw straight back at my knuckles. Only reason I still have all my fingers is the guy I subbed the demo to yelled at me to keep both hands on the tool right as I was reaching in with my free hand to clear the cut. I had my left glove about 6 inches from a blade that was still spinning down and I felt the air off it, no joke. What got me there was rushing a $1800 bid because the homeowner kept texting me about her graduation party that weekend. Now I cut from the outside in, never reach past the shoe, and I unplug the saw if I have to touch anything near the cut. I ate the 20 minutes of extra time on that job and it cost me nothing. If you have had a close one like this, what tool ended up being the one that almost took a finger?

The part nobody talks about is how a close call like that messes with your head for weeks after. You start flinching at every kickback and second guessing cuts you have done a thousand times, which honestly makes you more dangerous for a while. Getting rattled is its own hazard, so the trick is baking the safe habit in until your hands do it without your brain having to decide.
