Warning: tape and mud over a painted wall cost me 3 extra days in Boise
On a 1,200 sq ft flip in Boise, I skim coated right over the old paint on the first bedroom and the mud bubbled and peeled within a day. I switched to sanding and priming with a bonding primer first, and the second bedroom dried flat with zero callbacks. Do you guys always prime before skim coating, or do you roll the dice on bare drywall only?
Wait, you just skim coated straight over paint with no primer at all? I figured everyone knew mud needs something to bite into or it just slides around and peels. Three days lost on one bedroom is rough though, hope the rest of the flip went smoother.
Skipping primer is like painting over gloss, it might look fine for a week then it all lets go. @danielowens has the right idea, but even bonding primer wont save you if you lay the mud on too thick in one pass.
