Appreciation post: the $80 I spent on a Getty Images license saved my freelance gig
Last month a client hit me up for a blog post about home coffee gear and said she needed it up by Friday, no big deal. I pulled a photo from a random site and dropped it in, thinking nothing of it. Three days after it went live she texts me a screenshot of a demand letter from a stock photo company asking for $1,500 for that one image. I almost threw up because I'm a one person shop in Austin and that's rent. I went back and forth with the company, and they cut it down to $80 since I pulled the photo right away and replaced it. Now I buy licenses before anything goes live, even for blog posts nobody reads. That $80 was cheaper than a lawyer's first email. Anyone else have a close call like this, where buying the license upfront just saved your butt?
Noticed this same thing with late fees and parking tickets, where the small upfront cost feels annoying until you skip it once and pay ten times more. It is the whole reason I finally started reading the fine print on stuff I used to just click through. Skipping the boring step works great until it doesn't, and then it really works against you.
